Fair trade certified coffee as we know it today was born in 1988 in Oaxaca, southern Mexico, with the establishment of the original fair trade coffee producer co-operative, the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Isthmus Region (UCIRI). The fair trade model was conceived as an alternative to the conventional coffee market, designed to empower producers both economically and politically by building more direct links between producers and consumers, as well as determining equitable minimum prices and standards for trade.
